Her deadly dreams leave her in grave danger…
Since half-vampire Cat Crawfield and her undead lover Bones met six years ago, they’ve fought against the rogue undead, battled a vengeful Master vampire, and pledged their devotion with a blood bond. Now it’s time for a vacation. But their hopes for a perfect Paris holiday are dashed when Cat awakes one night in terror. She’s having visions of a vampire named Gregor who’s more powerful than Bones and has ties to her past that even Cat herself didn’t know about.
Gregor believes Cat is his and he won’t stop until he has her. As the battle begins between the vamp who haunts her nightmares and the one who holds her heart, only Cat can break Gregor’s hold over her. She’ll need all the power she can summon in order to bring down the baddest bloodsucker she’s ever faced . . . even if getting that power will result in an early grave.
Patience has never been one of my strong points and even more so when it comes to waiting for the next book in a favorite series. I’ve just finished reading Destined For An Early Grave and all I can think about is what will happen next? Do I need to stalk Jeaniene Frost to make sure she realizes just how much I NEED the next book? Does she understand the seriousness of the situation? Let’s hope so. I’m a bit rusty on my stalker skills but I’ll dust’em off if I have to. Hear that Jeaniene Frost? I’ll do it. I mean it! =D
There so many things to rave about in this series but two things really stand out for me–Frost’s knack for creating a deep emotional connection between her characters and readers and the wickedly sharp sense of humor she gifts them with. I admit I was reduced to tears on more than one occasion reading Destined For An Early Grave, and I had several laugh out loud moments.
A great deal of tension in this story was a result of the discord and doubt caused by a third party who challenges the validity of Cat and Bones marriage. I was concerned that the fighting and developing distrust between Cat and Bones would become tedious and put me off, but Frost managed to balance the romantic turbulence with thrilling action, suspense, and comedy that took me from beginning to end in a flash.
I want to share a few of my favorite funny quotes from the book.
During a passionate moment shared in an alley in Paris:
“They can hear, Bones,” I continued to object, facing the building as he spun me around. He continued to laugh. “Then do be sure to say flattering things.”
Bones stealing a car:
“This is your car now,” he said. “And yours is mine.” “My car,” the man repeated, eyes glazing. “Right. Go home and clean it, it’s ghastly dirty.”
Cat:
I was trapped indoors with my mother, her pissed-off boyfriend, Bones’s ex-lover, his horny sire, and his secretive best friend.
Cat during a particularly tense meeting with Bones…don’t ask, just read the book:
I only wished I hadn’t showered before this damned meeting—and where was a festering yeast infection when I needed one?
Cat expressing a bit insecurity:
She wore a strapless dress that looked poured onto her voluptuous figure. Long black gloves added a classy touch to the gown’s sexiness. Next to her, I felt like Carrot Top in drag.
Destined For An Early Grave is the 4th book in Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress Series. I eagerly await the next installment in Bones and Cat’s story. Next up for Jeaniene Frost is the first book in the spin off series Night Huntress World: First Drop of Crimson available February of 2010.

I feel ur pain..anxiously awaiting next book. Totally agree that she writes extremely witty characters and seamlessly pairs them with great action. And the romance…oh the romance.

Great Review. I am going to have to find the book so I can read them. I am adding them to my list of book I desperately need.
Destined for an Early Grave was excellent. I'm very impatiently waiting for the next Cat & Bones book.
I've said it before, in this book someone needed a Dr. Phil intervention, they just needed to communicate! Seriously, it was great and I can't wait for the next book. I'm also anxiously waiting for First Drop of Crimson, I just know it's going to be awesome!
@Patti–I just totally pictured Dr. Phil with fangs LMBO!!
the wait is long for Cat and Bones 5….. much patience is needed I believe. Luckily we get two spin off books inbetween and I can't wait to get my grubby hands on Spade.
Anyone on the fence about trying this series…don't hesitate. You, too, can join Addicted to JF Anonymous like the rest of us.
Yeah, looks like I'll be re-reading HTTG again tonight. LOL
Another great review! I want some Cats and Bones now!!
Love Cat and Bones, but haven't read this one yet. So glad to hear that Jeaniene doesn't disappoint! Loved your review!
Hmmm….I guess this means I should really read this series?? I haven't even read the first one, but you've made it sound so good, I'm adding it to my list!!
I'm a big fan of Urban Fantasy, so this looks like a good fit!
Perfect timing – I just finished reading this last week and I completely agree! I've felt like I've been having withdrawal or something!
This is another series I'm going to have to start reading!
I so loved this and had to cry too. I love the way Ms. Frost creates her characters and their interactions- one time you have to laugh so loud that you wake the neighbors or you have to cry like a baby. Wonderful book and series. Can't wait for the next one!
God I love Bones. If I could cuddle next to him at night I would. I just finished the second book in the series and I have to say this is one of my fav's this year. 2010 seems so far away, I need instant gratification now!
P.S. Your review excited me so much I am on Amazon buying the 3rd one in Frost's series.
