Mandi’s Story: Puppy Love, Middle School Hussy, and Happily Ever After

Mandi from SmexyBooks is here today talking about her Middle School romance with her husband Kevin.  As soon as I heard that Mandi and Kevin met and fell in love in Middle School, I knew I had to convince her to tell her story.  I mean really.  Middle School?  Awesome!  According to Mandi, it runs in her family.  Her parents met in Middle School too.

True love – I knew the moment I set eyes on Kevin I would marry him. I  looked into his dark eyes, and I could smell that spicy bonding scent emanating from him. My fangs started to descend and…

What, you don’t believe that I am actually a vampire? Fine, I will get on with my boring true love story.

I don’t remember the very first time I laid eyes on Kevin, possibly because we have gone to school together since we were in sixth grade. We never really were friends though until eighth grade English class, which was the last class of the day to meet. One day – ok, it was April 27th – my friends started whispering all morning, Kevin is going to ask you out..we hear he really likes you. Rumor had it he dumped his current girlfriend (who would later threaten to beat me up because I stole her boyfriend..oh, middle school) the night before and now his sights were on me. And sure enough, at the end of English class that day, the most romantic moment of my life occurred – the bell rang, I turned to stare lovingly into his eyes in anticipation of the moment, Kevin stood up, threw a note in my face, and ran out of the room.

That may have not been the most romantic way to ask someone out, but what I think is truly romantic, is that Kevin still carries the note around. In fact he recently had it laminated for fear it was disintegrating over the the years. The  note was very straight to the point –will you go out with me, yes or no. And if I chose yes I was to leave my phone number. I know a cute guy when I see one so of course I said yes! Then I had to hunt him down in the hallway.

That night he called me and we talked for a few minutes and I have no memory about our conversation, but I remember clear as day right before we hung up, Kevin said, “I love you.” I just stared at the phone and hung up. I mean, we had been dating for four hours! Kevin knew something I didn’t that day though. He knew we were it for each other, eight years later we would be getting married, and eighteen years later I would be telling the readers of fiction vixen our love story.

The first thing people always ask me when I tell them that we have been together since we were fourteen is, have you really been together that entire time? I usually say yes, although that is not technically true. The remainder of eighth grade and ninth grade were wonderful days. But tenth grade is the year I refer to as the “dark period.” Kevin was involved in the school play, and the female lead, an older classmen (HUSSY!), wooed Kevin, and one day I was dumped. Just like that. For five entire days we were separated. But don’t count smexy out! I wooed him right back and told that hussy to go to hell! Well, maybe not, but he did come crawling back five days later and since that point, we have never been apart. And do I bring up that story, often, just to annoy my husband? Oh yes.

From there, we graduated high school, went to the same college, got engaged in March of 1999 and married in July of 2000. Bought a house, had a kid, bought another house, had another kid.

It has now been almost eighteen years since he first threw that note at me. And while life, work and kids often don’t leave a lot of time for romance, we are still going strong. He literally makes me laugh every single day. And when we are out at one of his work functions, or a dinner and we end up in a crowded room separated from each other – when I look up and make eye contact with him across the room, he always winks at me, and to this day it always bring that butterfly feeling to my stomach, just like the days in English class.

Mandi, thank you so much for sharing your story.  I have the heart of a romantic and I truly love your story.

Back to the “dark period”…. When he uhh.. Broke up with u… I have some advice that I think is pretty good. It’s kind of relivant to that. If you boyfriend breaks up with you, don’t stop loving him. Instead, keep your feelings in the back of your heart. You never know. He might come back. ;)
