Review: Forsaken by Shadow by Kait Nolan

Cade wakes up in a motel room in Las Vegas, disoriented, injured and with only a few sketchy memories of his past. He doesn’t even know his name or who he is. After seeking medical attention at a hospital he is identified as Cade Shepherd and he finds out he was reported missing when he was a child. With no connections to his past or present he starts his life over fresh.

Ten years later he has made a name for himself as a professional fighter.  Although he’s successful, and mostly satisfied living the life he’s created for himself, he is still missing a huge part of his past. But Cade’s life is about to take drastic turn when a mysterious woman shows up at one of his fights.

Embry has lived the past ten years believing that the man she loves, Cade or Gage, as she knew him, is dead. Now she knows he’s alive and he may be the only one that can help her rescue her father who is being held by the military. The problem is Cade doesn’t know who she is and she must not only restore his memories, but she must convince him to help her on a dangerous mission to rescue her father who was once Cade’s mentor.

This story had my attention right from the beginning. I was fully intrigued by this tough, mysterious UFC fighter with an unknown past and the woman who holds the key to unlocking the memories of a life that was stripped from him long ago. However, while the story really grabbed my attention, there were a few moments of slight disorientation with the jump in timeline and a few flashbacks here and there. The transitions seemed a bit abrupt but not so much so that I couldn’t keep up.

The world that Kait Nolan has created is interesting in that she incorporates some of the familiar paranormal elements along with a bit of the unexpected. Along with that she adds in a good mystery, and a lot of action, and suspense. The romance between Cade and Embry is intense but I would have liked to have had a bit more back story with them to fully understand their bond and why it held strong for the many years they spent apart.

I enjoyed this debut novella from Kait Nolan and look forward to reading from her.

Favorite Quote:

“Oh for heaven’s sake, it’s not like you’re taking a piss. Just dematerialize already.” Impatience simmered in Embry’s voice.

  1. Great review FV. I love books abt UCF fighters. I may be adding this to my TBR.

  2. @tori aka ggs_closet: Not a lot of UFC action in this one but just knowing the hero was a UFC fighter was good. I like the tough guys. :)

  3. Ha..love the quote. So this has paranormal stuff too? Cool!

  4. Usually i’m not into ‘fight’ books but since you rec I read Willing Victim I’m all over guys who like to kick and punch.

    Nice review!!

  5. @Mandi Schreiner: Yes, it’s paranormal but a little different.

@KC/Smokinhotbooks: This really isn’t a fight book. The UFC thing is only in the beginning. The book focuses more on the romance and the mission.

Oh! I have this one on the big ol’ TBR pile. Danger, mystery and forgotten memory. Perfect combo.

I’ve often seen that transitions between flashbacks are hard to manage. I’m kind of getting used to being so abrupt because so many authors seem to be doing that lately. Hmmmm…

    Thanks for the review.

Wonderful review, I do agree that I like a tough man and a UFC fighter makes that list. I will make sure to stick this on the list.
