Review: Shadowfever by Karen Marie Moning

Shadowfever (Fever, #5)I’ve just finished reading what has to be my most anticipated urban fantasy series finale ever.  I’ll admit that although I’ve been twitching and whining for Shadowfever ever since I read the final line in Dreamfever, I was a little nervous when I finally got my hands on it. Sometimes unreasonably high expectations can doom a book before the first page is even read. After recently re-reading the fever series, I wondered if Karen Marie Moning would answer all my questions, tie up all the loose ends and would she be able to throw in anything unexpected? We Fever fans have speculated and theorized and dissected this series to bits. We’ve left no stone unturned right?  Wrong. Karen Marie Moning brought her “A” game and brought it big time with unexpected twists and turns throughout the entire story.

I feel like it’s impossible for me to write an in-depth review on this book without including spoilers so I won’t. I’ll just tell you how I felt about this amazing story without going into too much detail about events, jaw droppers and oh-em-gee moments. (And there are many, many of those moments.)

Epic is the word that first came to my mind after I read the words “The End” and closed the book on what was an amazing journey. I don’t think I’ve ever read a more satisfying final book in a series. I can’t even count how many times I was taken by surprise, shocked, blindsided and thrilled. I was left emotionally spent and completely happy with the many unexpected paths this story took.

Karen Marie Moning promised in her note to her readers at the end of Faefever that Mac would eventually have brighter days. I found myself wondering how it could be possible as Mac faced impossible foes, heartbreak, internal conflict as she fought her way through Fae infested Dublin. In Shadowfever we see a Mac that is broken beyond her limits, pushed to extremes only to see her rise up and fight another day. We see a Barrons that maintains his title, CJ (constant jackass) yet shows more of his heart than ever before. Since I’m a romance reader the happily ever after is a must and I was not disappointed in any way whatsoever with the conclusion of Mac and Barrons’ journey.

Mac’s story has been told and although the loose ends are tied up, it’s not necessarily a tidy little package. The ending implies there will be more to come from the fever world. Many of the Fever series secondary characters hold potential for some interesting stories to come. There is Dani, who is still very young and wild, Barrons’ eight who are all just as cantankerous and jack-assy as Barrons’, Detective Jayne and his men who are still fighting the good fight, Christian (I won’t say what his deal is) and perhaps even Jo and a few of Mac’s fellow Sidhe-seers.

I absolutely loved this book and it will go straight to my ‘read-it-again’ shelf alongside its four predecessors. My worries about over-inflated expectations and hype were completely unfounded as I was enthralled from the very first chapter. Karen Marie Moning ended her series on a high note and left me completely happy with the conclusion of one of my very favorite series.

Favorite Quotes:

From Mac:

And I’m the queen bitch from hell that’s going to make them all pay. The thought makes me smile.

From Barrons:

I’m the biggest baddest fuck and I have all the toys.

I actually have another very romantic quote that I love but I’ll wait a while to post it. I don’t want to ruin the moment for anyone. :)

You’ve completely & accurately summed up my feelings about this book & series. EPIC is definitely a very fitting word. Love the review!

  2. Dani says:

On chapter 35… can’t wait to get home from work…
So far I’m completely overwhelmed and like you, a little emotionally spent, it’s one of those books that makes you dream about it.
PS: Barrons can pee around me any time… =)

  3. Great review FV. I think Epic and emotional cover it. :)

  4. Penelope says:

Nice when something lives up to your expectations, isn’t it? :) :) :)

  5. Sophia (FV) says:

@Alyssa: I think I had to cut the word “epic” out of my review several times. I wanted to describe everything with it LOL.

@Dani: Totally! Feel free to pee Barrons!! lol

@tori aka ggs_closet: Tori, I’m an emo mess at the moment. I’m going to do some re-reading today.

@Penelope: Oh yes! We’ve waited so long for this book and KMM brought it!

  6. Julie says:

There are so many quotes that I LOVED in this book!!! And I loved how some of the more memorable lines from the other books were re-used in a new way. A sexy way. I can’t count how many times I *squee* and *sigh* and *oh no you didn’t just go there* while reading this book. I totally agree with everything you said here Sophia. Great review!

  7. Sophia (FV) says:

Oh the quotes. Barrons had some of the best but I just didn’t want to post them and ruin it for those that haven’t read it yet. I loved the one when they were in the basement again. omg.

  8. My only coherent thought is AHHHHHHH!!!!!

I just could not have been more pleased with this book. It surpassed ALL my expectations. OMG! How many times did I say “OMG” when reading this? LOL. KMM is the bomb. I love her. Maybe in a creepy way. I don’t really care. LOL.

Can’t wait to have the BIG discussion with everyone!!!

  9. KC says:

Best. Book. Evah!!! I think the only complaint I had were there were too many themes going on is Mac this, no wait she is **, oh now she is **. I like how Moning tied everything together and hopefully we will get spin offs for Dani, Christian, and Ryordan and his peeps.

  10. MinnChica says:

It was great, so great!! I can’t wait until we do a book discussion on this one! It’ll be fun to see how everyone reacted to all the twists and turns!!

  11. Right on — I just described it as an “epic tale” in an email to someone who hasn’t read it yet just this morning. :)

I’ll admit, I find KMM’s very rich, intense storytelling hard to read all at once, and I am loving the story, but started feeling a little drag in the middle, started skimming some of the deets, and had to put it down for a while — will pick it up again tonight.

Will come back and read smexy’s too, when I am done… but so glad to hear you don’t think it’s really “over over” :)

  12. Alley says:

This book is EPIC. I think Karen did the spin around of what Mac is to show that she was just as clueless and squabbling for answers as we were.

  13. And at least at this point in the story, about 50%, I just don’t feel Mac deserves Barrons, LOL — but that could be mostly selfish (don’t send a girl to do a woman’s job, LOL). But I am assuming from your review I’ll change my mind…

    Sam

  14. Sophia (FV) says:

@Mandi Schreiner: Yes most of thoughts while reading were ‘ahhhhhhhhhh’ LOL

@KC: I loved all the twists and turns and Mac’s identity crisis. I was shocked with every turn.

    @MinnChica: I know! I dying to discuss!

  15. Sophia (FV) says:

@Samantha Hunter: I’ve heard others say the pacing was off at some point as well. It never really slowed down for me but I was so hungry for answers I may not have noticed LOL.

  16. Sophia (FV) says:

@Samantha Hunter: Mac doesn’t deserve Barrons…hmmm. She is so not a girl in this book so I’m trying to think why she’s undeserving. I can’t go into detail without spoiling but Mac make huge sacrifices and is willing to do some incredible things for Barrons. Keep reading, I think you’ll change your mind.

  17. Judi L says:

I felt exactly the same way. I loved Mac and Barrons in this book – I could have read a whole book just about them. I am so happy at the way the series ended, but what a trip along the way.

  18. You just made my week…scratch that, my month! I was waiting and waiting for ShadowFever, so long in fact that I lost track of the release date. Voila! I saw your post on twitter and now I know what I’m reading tonight. (I was languishing in a trying-to-be-too-cerebral romance when what I wanted all along was Moning.)
Thanks! Great review…really heightens the anticipation and I appreciate your restraint in not spoiling. :)

  19. Sophia (FV) says:

@Judi L: Yes their romance was wonderful. We’ve waited a long time for conclusion. :)

@Kellyann Zuzulo: Oh Yay, happy reading!!

  20. twimom227 says:

    Yea! Glad you loved it!

  21. I wonder if we have the same romantic quote highlighted! There were some really great lines that made me all tingly! I would LOVE to see more about Christian.

  22. Minx says:

OMG… I am pleased this book had the same reaction for all of you. I neeed to read it again.

  23. I loved this book. Great spoiler free review!
