Sophia’s Reading Roundup – July 2011

Here are the stats for my July reading roundup:

  • 1 – A- rating
  • 5 – B ratings
  • 2 – B- ratings
  • 1 – C+ ratings
  • 2 – C ratings
  • 1 – DNF

Nice Girls Don’t Date Dead Men (Jane Jameson, #2) Molly Harper – currently-reading

Nice Girls Don’t Have Fangs (Jane Jameson, #1) Molly Harper – B
I’m really enjoying this series. I don’t always like too much snark, it wears thin quickly but I love Jane Jameson, the former southern librarian, now vampire. Her brand of humor really appeals to me.

First Grave on the Right (Charley Davidson, #1) Darynda Jones – C
This is one of those books that really, really liked up until a certain point, and then I didn’t necessarily dislike it, it just went to a place I don’t care for in PNR. I’m going to read the next book to see how it plays out though. Review to come.

Turn It Up Inez Kelley – A-
I ended up reading this book twice. The second time I only intended to skim it for refresh myself to finish the review but I just love Doc Hot and Honeypot and ended up re-reading it. This one is on my recommended reads for 2011.  Enter to win a copy HERE.

A Midnight Dance Lila DiPasqua – B
Finally!! I full length novel by Lila DiPasqua!! I’ve been waiting and I wasn’t disappointed in this Cinderella fairy tale erotic romance. Review to be posted later today.

Chasin’ Eight (Rough Riders, #11) Lorelei James – B-
This was a lot more emotional than I remember most Lorelei James books being. Her books always appeal to me on an emotional level but there was some conflict outside the immediate romance that was pretty emotional. I was kind of all over the place when reading this one.

Provocative in Pearls (The Rarest Blooms, #2) Madeline Hunter – C
After reading the first book in the series I was so excited to read this one. I was disappointed in this one. It just didn’t have the zing the first book had and the romance was ok but nothing impressive. Just middle of the road.

Sinful in Satin (The Rarest Blooms #3) Madeline Hunter – B
I really liked the heroine in this story. It seems like the opinionated, stronger secondaries get toned down in their own books but not Celia. She was even better in her own book and the author didn’t soften her one bit. She was made of awesome.

Trespass Meg Maguire – B
I haven’t read many reviews on this one yet because I wanted to get my review written first. I’m curious to see what others will think of the hero. I thought he was crazy at first but came to realize his behavior was probably more realistic than I like to admit. Interesting character.

Collide Megan Hart – DNF
Gah! I know. Big-time fan girl Sophia DNF’d a Megan Hart book. I could hardly believe it myself. I just didn’t like the 70′s soft core porn star and the fangirl stalker behavior of the heroine. People kept telling me to keep going, it got better but I kept picturing the hero looking like Gene Simmons of Kiss. I know, I know.

The Secret Guide to Dating Monsters  Secret McQueen 0.5) Sierra Dean – B
Oh wow, I want to dig into this series ASAP. This is the prequel to the Secret McQueen series and I really liked the heroine, the action, and the secondaries.

What a Goddess Wants (Forgotten Goddesses, #1) Stephanie Julian – C+
I liked that this new series is tied in with Stephanie Julian’s Lucani Lovers series. I think this is going to be a fun series as it focuses on the naughty Etruscan (forgotten) goddesses.

Storm’s Heart (Elder Races, #2) Thea Harrison – B-
The first book in this series really revved up my love of PNR. I enjoyed this second book in the series but had a couple of problems with it. The heroine lost her edge, probably because of her dire circumstances, but still I missed Tricks. The romantic connection seemed to come out of nowhere. I expected some build up. The action was fantastic, and the world is shaping up to be pretty intense, but  I’m not going to lie, I missed the dragons. Review to come.

So that was my months in books. How did you do in July?

    Nice month! ;)

So glad you are reading the Jane books…I love them.

I really enjoyed Turn it Up too!

  2. I just finished Dragon Bound (LOVED IT!!) and I really liked Tricks. Sad to hear she lost some of her edge but I’m still looking forward to starting her book.

    • Sophia (FV) says:

She’s dealing with some serious shiz in her book so it makes sense that her character is a little more intense. But I missed the her drunken antics from DB. She was so funny.

  3. Catherine says:

I had the exact same opinion of Provocative in Pearls and Sinful in Satin. The second book was really underwhelming for me.

    I can’t wait for Storm’s Heart!

  4. I’ve been wanting to read the Jane Jameson series.

I agree - Turn It Up was a great read! I love the on air chemistry! I need to read more books by Ms. Kelley.

Oh.My.Gawd. You DNF’d a Megan Hart book?!! I’m shocked. BTW I still need to read her books. I remember you saying I should read them in a particular order (by pub date I think) and I lost my list.

I finally got Dragon Bound from the library!! I can’t wait to start reading it.
