Envy is the third installment in J.R. Ward’s Fallen Angel series and it seems like Ward is finally hitting her stride in the series with this one. I think each book keeps getting better and this one is by far the best, the most interesting, the sexiest, and leaves us with one hell of a giant, “OMG what the hell just happened?” situation.
At the start of Envy the score is tied between savior Jim Heron and evil Devina. This time around Jim needs to save the soul of detective Thomas DelVecchio, Jr. (yes the same one from Lover Unleashed), who’s found himself in a pickle of a situation when he can’t remember if he killed the dead man in front of him or not. Enter into the story Internal Affairs officer Sophia Reilly, and sparks fly between our hero and heroine. Frankly Ward has me hooked on DelVecchio the minute midnight blue eyes and a treasure trail of dark hair down his stomach were mentioned.
And we’ve got side stories going on with Jim, Adrian *sigh*, and Eddie. Jim is determined to save Sissy, the girl Devina kidnapped in book 2. And while some may find Jim’s devotion to try to bring Sissy back home as some type of romantic connection Jim feels with Sissy, I don’t buy it. I just know that somewhere down the line in the series Ward will reveal some big secret about Jim and the pieces will fit together. Because that’s just how she rolls – that’s how she gets us.
We also get more detail regarding the life of arch angel Nigel and his relationship with Colin. I found these parts of the book intriguing.
We get more glimpses into Devina’s psyche which are interesting as well.
There’s a lot going on in Envy compared to the first two books as Ward continues to build the world and somehow also fit it into the Black Dagger Brotherhood world. It’s nice to see more of Jose DeLa Cruz since us BDB fans go all the way back to 2005 with him! I can’t help but wonder when the two series will start to have more of a crossover as Ward keeps dropping little references in the Fallen Angels series.
I did have two issues with Envy though. One is when the heroine, Sophia Reilly, is faced with a decision on if DelVecchio is really the man she believes him to be. I just didn’t believe Sophia’s decision at the time. I felt it was a little over the top. Also, Ward’s usual slang is ever present in Envy but sometimes it doesn’t fit the character that is using it.
Lastly I would be remiss if I don’t mention again that Envy features one big honkin’ WTF situation that left me speechless….and possibly needing therapy. I still can’t believe it. But I am dying to see where it goes from here. It als makes me happy to see that Ward still has it in her to shock the you know what out of me. Do I really have to wait another year? I can’t wait that long for more Adrian either who is quickly becoming one of my favorite book characters…ever. Haven’t read this series yet? I think you could start with book 2 and pick up on everything just fine.

Great review, Samantha. That WTF situation left me with my mouth hanging open and my heart broken.
I’m glad that someone out there thinks the Sissy thing is not going to be romantic. I want Jim to be happy but she is soooo young!
Easily the best installment in the series.
Oh! And no need to enter me in the contest… I was just commenting.
I want this book I want this book I want this boooook! I just bought Crave so I can catch up since y’all say this one is so good! I enjoyed Covet but just not enough to pick up Crave. Now I will.
I wasn’t a fan of the first two books but after reading your review I’m going to give it one more try. Thanks for the giveaway.
Since I decided to give this series one more chance (HATED 1st book), it would be great to win this.
That is an awesome quote to choose. Can’t wait to read it.

I’m glad to hear that this series is getting better! I love the BDB, but never could get into Covet. I’ll have to give it another try!

Please enter me for the giveaway!
I’m working my way through the BDB series but I have yet to meet these fallen angels, would love to. Thank you for the giveaway.
The first book in the series was just ok for me, which left the second book sitting in my TBR pile forever. I’m glad I finally read it because it was much better than the first. The third book, Envy, was fantastic! I can’t believe we have to wait a year for the next one. I also really like Adrian!
I forgot to say don’t enter me in the contest I already have the book.
I haven’t started this series yet, but it sounds like it’s high time I did. Envy sounds like a fantastic read and I’m looking forward to reading it.

Great review! I have the previous books in my TBR pile but haven’t gotten to them yet. I really should catch up.
ironss [at] gmail [dot] com
OK this is one of those rare times that I’m completely changing my mind on whether to give up on a series. I was not all that impressed with the first book, really disappointed with the second, but it sounds like Envy deserves a chance. Thanks for the review – I’m crossing my fingers to win the book and that the book is amazing!!
mandy(at)fuse(dot)net
I actually liked Covet but then kind of backburnered the series-but your review has me very intrigued to continue! Thanks for the great giveaway!
Great review. Now I want the book even more. I love the Fallen Angel series. I can’t wait to read Envy. I’m glad that Ward has put little droplets of the BDB world in this book. It would be cool if they could crossover and maybe Lassiter could have his own book and cross the two worlds. One can hope. Thanks for the giveaway.
truebloodfan[at]rock[dot]com
I haven’t started this series yet and from what I’m reading I can bypass the first book and start with the second book. Thanks for the chance to win the third!!

I want this book but I still need to read Crave. I’ll catch up I swear!
i loved the first two books, would love to get my hands on Envy so much..lol. thanks for a great giveaway!!!!
I love the BDB books and am happy to know that DelVecchio and Jose are both mentioned in this book and we can see what’s happening with them. Love the quote and can’t wait to read this one too.
Do I need to bother to say “Enter me to win”? I thought not.
I really love the way Ward handles this series. I was quick to get over the angels fad in pnr/uf, but I love this series <3
Please enter me, I want this book! Well I enjoy read BDB even I’m not read Lover Mine and Lover Unleashed , but I know I will enjoy Envy. Beside this one have Paul Marron as cover.. with wings!
Great review and I can’t wait to read Envy! I love J.R. Ward’s writing and the previous books in her Fallen series are great!
Thanks for the great review. I’m way down on the library’s waiting list, despite reserving early, so winning would be great. And you got me intrigued about the BDB crossovers, I’m one of the rare people who hasn’t read that series yet. Thanks again.
I’d love to win Envy, and can’t wait to read it, especially after this review! Makes me srsly wish other obligations would stop getting in the way. Ward is my all-time favorite author, of any genre – she took over from Dean Koontz with Lover Unbound.
I love JR. She knows how to keep her readers biting there finger nails for more.
At first I wasn’t going to enter because I haven’t read the prior books. And I have only just started BDB. But, your review sold me. If I win I will have to play major catch up (I won’t be able to start this series until I get caught up on BDB) but this is a great excuse to do it! Thanks for the giveaway.

I love BDB but have not read her other series. This could be the catalyst.
I haven’t read any in this series, though I am on Lover Mine in the BDB series. Sounds like this one might be a little addictive, too, eh?

I’ve been hearing so many good things about this book, and this review only reinforces those opinions. It’s been a really difficult year, for a variety of reasons, and I’m unable to afford books at the present time. Please count me in for the giveaway, and thanks for running it. I would *love* to win this book as JR Ward is one of my favorite authors!!!
Sounds interesting. I’ve been meaning to pick this series up. Thanks for the giveaway

Oh my god who doesn’t love a JR Ward book.
Would love to read Envy! I read the first book in this series and liked it, though not as much as the BDB series. It’s a series I would continue to read.

Thanks for the review. I really enjoyed the first book – probably one of the few. I ran out and bought the second the day of release, and it’s still sitting on my shelf. Now that I know the “bad guy” wins round two, I may just skip it and jump to the next one. Thanks!
Thanks for the giveaway! I have not read this series yet but have heard a lot of good things about it. Love books that make you say “OMG, what the hell just happened?” I’m moving this series up on the TBR list.
BornajhawkATaolDOTcom
I read and loved Covet so much that I devoured the BDB series waiting for Crave. Envy is definitely on my Book Shopping List.
This book sounds great I would love it!
