Welcome to the Darkfever Discussion!

Welcome to the Darkfever Discussion

The first part of this post is where we include the important facts/clues that we learned in Darkfever. A lot of this book is introducing us to the Fae world, getting to know the three main players – Mac, Jericho Barrons, and V’Lane, and giving us get a taste of how evil some of the Fae can truly be. As we go further along in the books, a lot more questions and theories will be addressed.

We are pretending we have only read Darkfever. Yes, some of the issues below have already been answered in a subsequent book, but we are keeping those answers held back until that particular discussion for those that are reading this series for the first time.

Note: Direct quotes from the book are in italics.

Fae Facts:

  • “Fae: a.k.a. the Tuatha Dé Danaan. Divided into two courts: the Seelie or Light Court, and the Unseelie or Dark Court. Both courts have different castes of Fae, with the four royal houses occupying the highest caste of each. The Seelie Queen and her chosen consort rule the Light Court. The Unseelie King and his current concubine govern the Dark.”
  • Aoibheal, the Seelie Queen of the Light is no longer in charge and no one knows where she is.
  • V’Lane is one of the Seelie princes, and the Queen (at some point) asks V’lane to use Mac to help find the Sinsar Dubh.
  • “After an eternity of confinement, some of the lower-caste Unseelie have begun escaping their prison. Despite our efforts to isolate the weakness in the fabric of our realms, we have not been able to determine how they are breaking free.”
  • The Fae have eight relics: Four Light – Stone, the Spear, the Sword, and the Cauldron. (Barrons and Mac have only the spear)
  • Four dark – Mirror, Box, Amulet and the Book (Sinar Dubh).
  • Unseelie are hunting for the Sinar Dubh as well, under someone named The Lord Master (Confirmed as Darroc from her Highlander books)
  • Barrons already has one of four stones, Mac steals another from Malluce. It makes a noise, when all four get together they will sing a “Song of Making” – This will reveal text of sinsar dubh. In “an accomplished druid’s hands” one of the stones can reveal part of the text.
  • Spear is one of two weapons known to kill Fae – any Fae, no matter the caste – except the shades. Mac has no defense against shades except the light.

Mac Facts:

  • Mac is a sidhe-seer (she can see through fae glamor  and she can sense the sinar dubh) She is a Null (can freeze fae for a short period of time) and she can sense OOPs (Objects of power)
  • Old lady refers to her as an O’Conner, Mac questions her biological parents
  • Seelie/Unseelie are unable to detect their own objects of power  – Mac can detect them, making her very useful to everyone
  • V’lane offers Mac the Cuff of Cruce – permits shield from Unseelie – Mac won’t take it because she knows it comes with a price
  • At end of the book, Mac detects Sinsar Dubh traveling in a car.

Barrons Facts (aka: What is Barrons?):

  • Barrons makes Mac get the spear (Seelie item) he won’t touch it. Can he touch it? We don’t know yet.
  • Twice Barrons jumps down from a very high place without getting hurt. Won’t answer to Mac when she confronts him about it.
  • “The truth is, your world is going to hell in a hand basket, Barrons had said. Recalling his words, I caught something in them I’d missed before. He’d said “your” world. Not “our” world. Mine. Was it not his world also?
  • Mac sees him walk at night among the Shades, and they ignore him. They eat everyone else.

Miscellaneous Facts:

  • Lord Master is not Fae. He is bringing Unseelie in through a gate.
  • Quote from the Gray Man: “The Lord Master is back, you stupid bitch, and he’s going to do the same thing to you he did to the last pretty little sidhe-seer. You’ll wish you’d died at my hands. You’ll beg for death the same way she did.”
  • “I told you she would come, Mallucé,” said the Lord Master. “We will use her to finish what her sister began.” (<–What exactly did her sister begin?)
  • Fiona, Barrons’ assistant in the bookstore is privy to Fae information.

Barrons Quotes That Make Us Do a Dirty Swoon:

  • “He wasn’t handsome. That was too calm a word. He was intensely masculine. He was sexual. He attracted” (Mandi falls down dead)<—Sophia kicks Mandi to the curb to snuggle up with Barrons.
  • “His gaze flicked to my chest and stayed there a moment. When he returned his attention to the box, I caught my breath and stared blankly at the top of his dark head. Barrons had just given me the most carnal, sexually charged, hungry look I’d ever seen in my life, and I was pretty sure he didn’t even know he’d done it.”
  • “Sometimes Ms. Lane one must break with one’s past to embrace one’s future. It’s never an easy thing to do. it is one of the distinguishing characteristics between survivors and victims. Letting go of what was, to survive what is.”
  • “His fingers were light as butterflies on my battered cheek and he was speaking softly, but it wasn’t in English. It sounded like one of those dead languages they use in the kind of movies I used to channel-surf through quickly – and now regret not having watched at least one or two because I probably would have been a whole lot better prepared for all of this if I had. I think he kissed me then. It wasn’t like any kiss I’d ever felt before.”

“Take off your panties” V’Lane Recap:

  • “It is what I am. I am every erotic dream you’ve ever had and a thousand more you’ve never thought of. I am sex that will turn you inside out and burn you down to ashes.” It smiled. “And if I choose, I can make you whole again.”
  • “There is no protection against one such as I, sidhe-seer. We of the royal house affect humans in this manner. There is nothing that can be done to prevent it.” One day I would know that for the lie it was. But not before I’d been burned by the truth in it.

Mac Meter – Her progression from Rainbow Girl to Savage Mac

Mac starts off very – girly. Long blonde hair, painted nails, and wears pink as much as possible. Barrons refers to her as “Rainbow Girl”. By the end of Darkfever, she is “Savage Mac.” – black hair, black clothes, curses, and has experienced things that would be unimaginable to Rainbow Girl. Here, we will track her progression.

By page 130, Mac dyes her blonde hair black, and chops off her hair so the Gray Man won’t recognize her.

Later…

  • Barrons wasn’t turning out to be a good influence on me at all. In a single night he’d gotten me to dress like a floozy, burgle like a common thief, and now he had me cussing like a sailor as I seconded his opinion. “Fuck,” I exclaimed.
  • I’d lived through yet another Dublin night and that, in and of itself, was swift becoming cause for celebration in my badly warped little world.
  • One day I would stop taking off my clothes in V’lane’s presence, but the cost of that resistance would be a piece of my soul.

And to end the book

  • Gone was the energetic step that had bounced so prettily on air. Mac 2.0 strode with determination and focus on feet that were rooted firmly to the ground.

Mac Meter (1-Rainbow Girl, 10-Savage Mac) Score: 3

Notes from Spell of the Highlander (final book in KMM’s Highlander series)

Towards the end of the final Highlander book, KMM foreshadows events in her Fever series. There are probably more clues than this, but here are the big ones stated in the final pages of Spell of the Highlander:

  • Seven times now she’d (Queen Aoibheal) prevented the extinction of the purest and most potent of the Druid lines. And positioned the five most powerful druids that had ever lived precisely where she wanted them. Where they could ally her.

The Five:

There was Dageus (The Dark Highlander), possessing far more knowledge of the Draghar, the thirteen ancients. The memories she’d left in him were doing things to him that he wasn’t admitting, Not to Drustan, not to his mate.

There was Cian (Spell of the Highlander), possessing far more power than any one Druid should have: the genetic fluke, the unexpected mutation born once in a bloodline. The things Dagues and Cian could do together if they put their minds to it worried even her.

Then there was Drustan (Kiss of the Highlander). Drustan MacKelter was that unique kind of man whose named lived forever in legends of men- a warrior so pure of heart that he was beyond corrupting. A man who would die for his beliefs, not just once but ten thousand times over if necessary.

As for her other two chosen, she would be seeing them soon. (<—WHO?!?)

Also: Adam Black (The Immortal Highlander) tells Gabby the torques he wears are a symbol of the royal houses. Barron’s torque is silver and black. Coincidence?

Discussion Time:

We don’t want to get into the nitty gritty speculating yet, because there are so many more developments in the next three books and we don’t want to spoil it for those that have only read book one. As we go through each book, we will have more theory related questions.

What were your first impressions when you met Mac and Barrons. Were you drawn to them from the start? Did Mac’s innocent/naive vibe appeal to you? Was Barron’s intensity and the cloud of mystery surrounding him aggravating or sexy?

Do you think Barrons didn’t touch the spear on purpose?

Why is Fiona privy to all Fae/Barrons information? We assume she is mortal due to her age, but what is up with her?

Mac finds JR scratched into wall near where Alina died. She thinks it means Junior (what Alina used to call her) . What if she meant JB (Jericho Barrons)? Alina alludes she has been betrayed TWICE.

Who are the other two powerful druids the Queen is referring to above?

Did we miss anything? Any other thoughts before we head off to Bloodfever (the book we like to call – the book with the cave scene)

Remember, in fairness to those that have not yet read the rest of the series, we are going to try to limit our discussion to events that took place in Darkfever only.

A very special thank you to Mandi for taking our unruly spreadsheet full of notes, quotes and thoughts and forming it into a coherent, thoughtful post.

I didn't pay attention to the Barrons falling from up high thingy the first time I read the book, but this time I did. The not touching of the spear thing set off alarms in my head as well. Barrons is also out at night mostly. Do you think that factors into anything? I think there was only 1 scene where he was out during the daytime.

I definitely think he is a druid, but I think he is other things too..from this book we only know he can walk among the shades – big clue. We only see him at night. And he can somehow come down from high places (fly?). Hmmmmmmmm…..

When he says "Mac" that is your first glimpse (beside the boob staring) that something deeper than just his "OOP" detector is happening. Also when he give her the manicure at the end….TOTALLY shocked me the first time I read it.

Barrons saying "Mac" is our first glimpse into his feelings of what may be more than just using Mac as an "OOP" detector. That and the manicure which SHOCKED me the first time I read it :)

I can't remember about the pictures…is it brought up again in later books?

I was wondering at the beginning if I could connect to mac, she such a girly girl but with each chapter she surprised me more and more. How she deals with her first sidhe-seer vision/encounter with an Unseelie but also her quirky humor and fighter spirit got more to the forefront as the story progressed. I definitely had to get to know her but at the end I loved her as a heroine.

Now Barrons, oh man, his introduction in the story got all my bells and whistles going. I noticed his sexiness but it was the air of mystery around him that bot agravated and tiltilated me. I'm curious by nature and he is so evasive in his answers *argh* Frustrating, but of the good kind. I think KMM really did a great job to give us such intriguing main characters with many layers to dig through!

Perhaps Barrons is one of those two powerful druids, I don't know. He comes across as something ancient, I even sported the thought he may be of a Royal Unseelie line. I think KMM is so going to surprise us with his origin.

I have to join in on this discussion! This is the first book by KMM that I have ever read and I just finished it a couple of days ago.

I loved Barrons from the start, but couldn't stand Mac at first. I really don't get along with the barbi doll types. Since I haven't read any other of KMM's books, I haven't a clue what Barrons is, but that doesn't stop me from swooning over him! lol

Tori, what you say makes sense – he's been since the beginning of time. He reminds me of Raphael (From Nalini's Angel series) in that way because he appears cold and unfeeling. Yet he has this unexpected tender side for Mac. I think he's surprised that she is so passionate about finding out what happened to her sister.

And I liked Mac right from the start, pink Barbie polish and all.

Mandi-Tori-Bells-Yes, those pics are brought up in future books. :)

I think Barrons is Druid-ish based on other clues from the Highlander books. But he's more powerful and dabbles in other 'arts'. Yeah, I'm in the know LOL.

I love the little touches of affection we see only occasionally like Barrons calling her by Mac or the kiss he may or may not have given.

Sophie, he's SO old he's ageless, and after a time, any humanity he had is gone. Yet he still has this powerful pull to Elena that he cannot deny. So far I've only read the first book, so I don't know if he softens, but I liked that he wasn't a creampuff of an Archangel.

LOL..it looks like I'm the first noob reader to jump into the discussion. Here's are some of my answers to the questions:

As FV, Smexy and Julie know, I was not a fan of Mac until waaay into the book. I actually wasn't convinced about Barrons either until much later. How many times does something have to try to kill you before you stop living in denial. And yes, I know, Barrons is all sexy and stuff but, I didn't like that he assaulted Mac at the beginning.

I hadn't thought about the whole not touching the spear thing until just now.

Oh that Fiona. Maybe she's been around Barrons for a while so he trusts her with Fae info?

I missed the fact that Alina alludes to being betrayed twice. To be honest, I thought Barrons was Mac's sister's boyfriend up until the moment Mac reveals that he's not.

I thought Barrons was some sort of vamp (the whole only going out at night and dropping from great heights thing) but, I'm thinking he's maybe a Druid now. Maybe Mac's the other? Maybe some sort of druid/sidhe-seer hybrid type thing?

    Wow…talk about babbling… =/

I didn't love Mac either the first time I read DF. She was so naive and immature in my opinion. I have grown to love her and I think as you read further, you understand more that she had to be presented that way…but I agree I was turned off at first.

I always fall for a more dark and dangerous hero and Barrons fit that for me right off the bat.

@Jen D – Barrons very well could be a vamp/vamp + something else? Maybe that is why he can walk among the shades? Is that why he was able to defeat Malluce? Or why he is able to jump up/down from various places? I really need to know! LOL

Jen D–Oh what if Barrons is a Vamp? Only going out at night, he told Fiona he could find others to 'serve' his needs, he drops from high places doesn't get hurt. He's doubtful or has knowledge about Malluce being a real vampire….hmmmm taps chin. :)

I guess I'm jumping in late on this one…

Leontine, maybe it is because I haven't read KMMs Highlander series, but I always thought he might be part Royal or something, too. Who knows maybe he is a fae/druid mix if that is possible. I have a feeling KMM is going to do a bit of surprise with that one.

I always liked Mac from the start – I think her Rainbow Girl transition to Mac 2.0 is the reason I like her so much.

Barrons was suspect at first – but then he has a way of worming in… ;)I think because he wouldn't touch the spear he was either trying to confuse and distract Mac, or he might have a bit of Fae in him or something.

    I'm here, I'm here!
I never minded Mac. I thought her transition from Rainbow Girl (*tear*) to Kick Ass Chick is important to the story and makes her more real. For her to just show up and be all "if you don't tell me what you know I'll go crazy on your a**" would have made her really unrelatable. She's in a far away place in a strange situation and of course she is going to try to hang on to her 'old' life and comforts until she just can't anymore.

As for Barrons… The moment he says his name I'm a gonner. Holy Frickin' Cow he makes my knees crumble. And even more this time around than the first time I read it. I remember thinking there was a possibility that he was a Vampire when I read it the first time around. Now…I'm not sure. But I never considered his being a Druid. That's an interesting idea. And I love what you are saying about him being so ancient that he's lost most of his humanity. That makes the tender moments with Mac even more *swoon* worthy. OMG I LOVE BARRONS!

What an amazing post! Wow. You ladies sure compiled some great quotes and insights for this first book. I have so much to say.. but am afraid the words in my mind are flying around faster than I can articulate in a comment.

First, I have to say that I read DARKFEVER the first time way back in August 2007 and back then thought it was just okay. I have some theories about why I thought that back then.. but that's for another disucssion.. for now I will say that I just re-read DARKFEVER over the weekend and OMG! I LOVED IT! I could barely put the book down and as soon as I finished it, I was torn between writing a review and just picking up BLOODFEVER. Needless to say, I have about 100 pages maybe to go to finish BLOODFEVER. LOL. I am at the cusp of the cave scene by the way.. Mac just got there.

Second, I remember now part of the reason that I delayed picking up the subsequent books after reading DARKFEVER and that was because I wanted to read the Highlander books first so I could pick up on these other clues from that series! The info you provided is fascinating really… Do you all think I should stop after BLOODFEVER and go read the Highlander books before picking up FAEFEVER?

Third, I love Mac. The first time reading DARKFEVER, not so much. I thought she was too immature and too … pink and fluffy. But this time… I liked her A TON. I think she is still naive in this book… but she her love for her sister is so deep and her death was–IS– so devastating to her, that I can now acknowledge or appreciate how that alone was enough to give Mac the determination to toughen up as much as she could to DO SOMETHING to honor Alina and their bond.

Third, the Mac Meter is great! I agree with the score of 3 at the end of DARKFEVER. Not that anyone asked. LOL.

Fourth, I think Barrons' intensity and cloud of mystery is both aggravating and sexy. Imagine how boring he and this whole story arc would be if he was upfront? Not only that, but the dynamic between Mac and Barrons is so complex and interesting… their relationship is really, really well written, IMHO.

I didn't even think that maybe Alina meant to write JB in the cobblestone and not JR! *gasp!*

Fifth, a Maple Bacon donut? For real?

I know she see's either pics or the body itself because she talks to inspector abt the bite marks. I do not think Alina is alive.

I think Fiona has been with Barrons for a long, long time. A lot of humans who have some magical heritage are. IE: The MacKelters. Remember, in Fae time can be manipulated. What if Barrons could take Fiona there an in essence slow down her aging.

The Barrons-vampire theory is interesting, but if he is some kind of vampire, I think that might only be part of what he is. Wouldn't he have noticeable fangs? I'm more of the opinion that he is a complex mix of different entities (Fae, Druid, vampire…) or something entirely unique. Is it too far fetched to throw fallen angel into the mix? Or some kind of heavenly servant/savior type? I mean.. he wants to prevent the Unseelies from taking over Earth and killing humans, right? Just thinking out loud. ..

Tori.. I believe I own all the Highlander books at this point. My TBR was lonely without them. ;)

Barrons is a total byronic hero! I never thought to connect the Highlander series to this but now that you guys have said that it makes total sense now!

I'm going to read Bloodfever this weekend now. I want closure but it sounds like you won't get it til the last book!

I thought Barrons was some dark being like a Vamp or something when I read it. I didn't like him at the start but he soon grew on me. And I really loved the whole dark-side of Barrons though. Am I the only one?

There was also a paragraph in Chapter 12. I have it in Ebook format, but it was when they were at Malluce's and him and Barrons had a stand off. This part I am keeping in mind through out.
"Eyes narrowed, I looked back and
forth between them. Something nagged at me, something I couldn’t quite put my finger on. It was a
thing that I would stupidly fail to put my finger on until it was too late.
    Before long, I would understand
that nothing had been what it seemed that night
, and the reason Barrons had faced-off so coolly with the blood-sucking Master was because he’d gone in with the quiet assurance that, no matter what happened, he would walk out alive, and not because he had Mallucé by the proverbial fiscal balls."

What do you guys think of this?

There is no way Barrons is a vampire or werewolf. It is very anticlimactic, mediocre and a cop out. Think about it, to wait 5 books to find out that he is a vampire/werewolf is just wrong. Also look at Moning's other work, the Highlander series. All the lead men characters are connected in one way or another to Scottish or Irish mythology. So I am for like the Druid King :)

Jericho Barrons was currently focused somewhere else, and being nearly used up, leaving only one percent of him here and now, in this room, paying attention
    to O’Bannion."

Sorry I'm late. I just finished reading Darkfever so here I am!

    Notes from reading your recaps
Yes, Barrons walking freely among the Shades is interesting…

The whole V'Lane thing is hilarious! How Mac would just start taking off her clothes and "get into position". LOL Speaking of V'Lane – we know that he is a prince but he's referred to as an "it" in the book. Is there a reason for that? Maybe one that is explained later on in another book?

    Discussion Time
I liked Mac from the start. Yeah, she was innocent and perhaps a little naive and too girlie, but that girl has perseverance. I can't wait to find out Mac's heritage. Barrons was sexy at times and frustrating at others. He hardly answers any questions, only to bring up more questions. Very mysterious.

I didn't even notice that Barrons didn't touch the Spear until now!! But now that you guys mentioned it, yeah, I think he didn't touch it on purpose. He's a man of reason; there is a reason for everything he does.

There's more to Fiona. I am wondering what her role is in this whole "war"…And I wonder if her and Barrons have a past..? I don't think she's mortal. She has to be something…

Hmm, Barrons didn't come to mind when I learned of the message Alina scribbled in cobble stone. But now you have me thinking if I should be questioning Barrons' involvement, if there is involvement on his part…

I haven't a clue as I have not read the Highlander series. Am I missing out on important information by not reading them? Or will I find out all I need to know from you ladies?

I do have one question – What is the meaning behind "fever" being in the title of each book?

I am bookmarking this post for reference :)

You know what I can't believe I forgot to ask myself and what hasn't really been brought up here yet? WHY DOES BARRONS WANT THE BOOK?!

I hope to read this series in one sitting come January.

But from what I've heard and read, it's not certain Mac may end up with Barrons but maybe sex god elf king dude?

Book Vixen, you reminded me that yes, Sophie, what a fabulous job you did on this post!

I'm skimming comments so I'm sure I missed stuff, but I love that I'm not the only one obsessing on Barrons. I'm also reading the Highlander series, but I just started book 3, which is going reaaalllly slow for me. Can't wait for the later books.

To The Book Vixen: I liked Mac from the beginning too. She didn't annoy me and she had a brain.

I like V'Lane too. But I just got a feeling about him. I think he is referred to as "it" because Fae aren't necessarily human. But that is a good point, There could be more to that. I will keep it in mind.

I think Mac maybe part Fae. In one of the Highlander books, we find that the Fae can have children. Her real father is never mentioned, but maybe there is a reason for that?

The thing with the Shades is very interesting. Barrons is amazing. He may make me scream at times, but it is fine. I love the way he talks too. LOL! But you are so right. He doesn't do anything just to do something. He calculates everything.

There is more about Fiona we find in Dreamfever. It is clear she knows Barrons secrets and Mac's.

I don't think Barrons had anything to do with Alina's death. But I do believe that Rowena knows something. I don't trust that woman. I think she also had something to do with their mother's death. I find it odd how Rowena tried to get rid of Mac when she first met her, but she helps all the other sidhe-seers.

There is not too much of a connection with the Highlander series and the Fever series except the characters.

Not too sure what the Fever is either. Maybe it is the way Barrons makes us feel? LOL/

I've thought about this book thing and if Barrons' is team good guy then I'd imagine that he'd want it to prevent whatever craziness is going to ensue. If he's team bad guy then I'm guessing he wants to accelerate the craziness that's going to ensue.

That's good question Julie. He could want it to save mankind or to destroy it right? We still don't know 100% for sure Barrons is a good guy. Everything is still so up in air. Since we don't want to discuss too much beyond this book yet it's hard to get into the nitty gritty with Barrons.

Book Vixen – I didn't read the highlander books until after Faefever..you are not really missing anything. If you do read them, I rec only reading 4-7 (those pertain more to fever and are just better)

But really there are only very minor clues in them.

@KB – I think the discussion as to whether Barrons and MAC have a HEA is best discussed after Dreamfever…a lot happens….*zips lips*

@JenD Nice point. Although he is mysterious, and at times frustrating, in Darkfever ultimately he helps Mac. I guess the question is – does he have good intentions if he ever gets his hands on the book?

For all of you who've read the rest of the books it must be ridiculously hard not to go into more in depth discussions. You all have been amazing at holding back info. Lord knows I wouldn't be able to. Just wanted to say THANKS!

JenD–Yes before I comment or answer a question I have to stop and think, wait, did that happen yet? LOL. It's fun re-reading this series though and really fun discussing it with people who've read the series and those that haven't.

KarenM–It's really hard speculating about Barrons at this point since we're trying to limit the discussion to Darkfever for those that have not read the rest of the series yet. There is SO much info and clues to Barrons nature coming up in the next few books. :)

Karen–I think we should plan a no holds barred discussion for January. We'd have to put of lots of spoiler warnings for those that have not read it yet. But yes, I really want to discuss this series in full once we've all read the last book. Is it January yet? lol

Yes, Yes, Yes we need a discussion after Shadowfever. I can't wait to be able to go "Oh, THAT'S what it was all for!" I for one can't wait for the discussion after Dreamfever!

As for the 'fever' in the name thing… That is such a fantastic question that I'm going to email Karen's assistant to see if she can answer. She's nice. Maybe she'll answer since Karen is usually really busy. :)

I have only read the first two books so far (just finished Bloodfever a little over an hour ago!), but there is reference to the titles in their respective books so far. If I had them in ebook, I would do a search and tell you what page to look… but alas I'm reading the first three books in paper.

The fever references weren't terribly relevant, IMO, but sort of pertain to Mac's umm… what shall I call it? Her state of mind in that book? Dark fever because she is enlightened to the darkness of the world around her that she was previously oblivious to and know is caught up in. Blood fever because she is out for the blood of her sister's killer with a vengeance.

Christine–yes, I've seen how each book title is connected to each story as far as Dark, Blood etc. but it never occurred to me to wonder why the "Fever". I'm not sure is I believe it refers to Mac's 'state of mind' though. Could be but I'm hoping there's more to it.

Oh, I understand what you mean now.. the specific use of "Fever" and why? Gotcha.

I found the page reference in Bloodfever to dark fever and blood fever on p. 179 of Bloodfever if you want to go back and read it.

There was some speculation in earlier comments about Mac possibly being Fae. If that were true, that would defunct her ability to detect Fae objects of power, though… so I don't think she can be part Fae.

I fell pray to all the "fever" talk on twitter last week and moved Darfever to the top of my TBR. In fact I just finished it over the weekend. There is some stuff mentioned here about Barrons I did not notice (like "your" world, not touching the spear and the JB scratched into the pavement…omg so thought it was for junior. I did take note of his jumping abilites and the thing with the shades. Although not as overwelmed as others (bellie) with the series, I am interested enough to keep reading and am almost done book 2 Bloodfever. Can't wait to read your future posts and find out what other details I missed and things that make me go mmmmmmm?

Hmmm… Never thought about why they were called Fever… maybe the peeps who have read the entire series would have a better guess than me. I've only read the first one.

Walmart didn't have Bloodfever, either. I guess I have to order it online and wait. BOO

The Book Pimp Blogs, Alina definitely scratched "JR" in the stone pavement, but some were speculating that maybe Alina was trying to scratch out "JB" when she died and maybe didn't finish making the B…

I think the rest of the series is going to be even more compelling to you once you finish Bloodfever, if you didn't already finish it when you read this! :)

What a great discussion! Leiha shared the link with me and said you were asking why the word "Fever" was in every title. There's nothing profoundly deeper, other than: those things which change us, carve us tend to begin with an uwelcome, unpleasant reality shift, accompanied by a strong desire to stop what's happening but an inability to escape it. The confusion, persistence and heat of a fever is the perfect metaphor for what Mac endures in each book, each fever increasingly different, and more difficult to escape…
